Emergency Services

We will continue to provide 24-hour access to emergency services at all 10 hospital facilities across Wide Bay.

We will ensure that at least 90% of all patients in our emergency departments will be seen, treated and admitted or discharged within four hours by 2017.

We will review our acute hospital infrastructure requirements in Hervey Bay to better meet the growing demand for emergency services.

We will consider options including GP home visits, one-stop shops, GPs in emergency departments, and co-located 24/7 urgent care medical practices.

We will explore options for advanced practitioner roles across all specialties, including for example using nurse practitioners within emergency departments.

We will work with QAS regarding the Extended Care Paramedic model to allow paramedics a greater scope of practice and thereby reduce unnecessary transfers to ED.

We will ensure better access to after hours services by working with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), Medicare Local, General Practice and the 13Health helpline to develop treatment pathways.

Surgical and Elective Services

We will focus on the elimination of waiting lists and work toward a maximum 6 month wait for all specialities from GP referral to surgery.

We will review our infrastructure requirements, including wards, beds and theatres, to ensure that growing service demand and increased throughput can be met.

To ensure the safety and sustainability of our specialist services, we may need to consider the potential for relocation of a service (for example Urology, Orthopaedics) to a single site.

We will implement electronic referrals and discharges to improve the interface between our GPs and the hospital, ensuring we comply with best practice guidelines for 15 specialties.

We will explore options to use advanced practitioner roles across all specialties including, for example, using nurse endoscopists, advanced physiotherapists and nurse practitioners. …
