Physical Boks Had Better of the Welsh; THE RUGBY UNION UTTLEY ON RUGBY

WALES were desperate to get a result against southern hemisphere opposition in Cardiff last weekend, but failed again as South Africa emerged victorious.

At odd points in the game they managed to gain ascendancy, but they failed to get enough points on the board. Ultimately,they could not match the sustained physicality. South Africa aSe a very good all-round competent side and, while they lack the subtlety of New Zealand, they are close in consistency and effectiveness.

Scotland are the next assignment for South Africa on Sunday, and it was interesting to hear their coach Scott Johnson saying this week how he has big men in his side who need to think like big men. I just can't see them making any great in-roads up there and it looks like another home defeat.

One common theme from the games last weekend was the quality of pitches, especially at Stade de France, Millennium Stadium and Murrayfield. The size of the divots coming up was remarkable, and made the scrums difficult. …
