MINING and environmental studies are two things you might not always think go hand in hand.

But 17-year-old Dysart senior Hope Woods plans to study environmental science and nab herself a career in the resource sector.

Hope was one of 14 Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) students from across the state selected to participate in the QMEA/BMA Make it Now in Engineering (MINE) Challenge.

She went into the program tossing up between a future in engineering and environmental studies, but after some hands-on experience has decided the latter would be better suited for her.

During the course, Hope met a BMA environmental scientist, who gave her insight into what a career in science might entail.

"She gets involved in different projects," she said.

"She will test the water around the mine site to see if there is any contamination."

A hands-on job, where she gets to be on site, would be ideal, Hope said.

Her father works as a dragline supervisor and her mother also works in the mines in administration. …
