RUGBY LEAGUE: Javarn White was rushing to the airport when he heard his name announced over the loud speaker at the All Blacks tournament in Townsville.

The G.H. United fullback had just won player of the carnival.

"I certainly wasn't expecting to win it, I was on my way out, so I had to rush back," he said.

The 25-year-old normally runs on for the Ipswich Jets in the Queensland Cup, but had been asked to play for Mackay's Grace Hoffman and Gail Hine memorial team at the weekend's matches.

"It was a real honour to play for them," he said.

"I played a game against them when the tournament was in Cairns... I went up to a few of the players and said: a[approximately]Why didn't you ask me to play, I would have been happy to'."

White's father spent some time in Mackay before moving to Rockhampton.

White said Grace Hoffman or "Gracie" was part of his family. Mick Pitt, who is one of the organisers of the Mackay side, said all the players were prepared to put in the hard yards. …
