A MAN "chose to lie" to Centrelink about his income almost every fortnight for two years.

Scott Peter Clarke rorted the system for $19,135 between December 2008 and December 2010. He declared only $7700, despite earning about $55,000 while working for six different employers during that period, Commonwealth prosecutor Aaron Guilfoyle said.

Magistrate Damien Dwyer described Clarke's offending as "persistent and consistent", and as such warranted a term of imprisonment.

"(It was) a deliberate action on your part to deceive (the Commonwealth)," Mr Dwyer said.

For 32 of the fortnights, Clarke wasn't entitled to any Centrelink payments and for 17 he was entitled to only part of the payments.

Mr Guilfoyle said Clarke was only entitled to full payments for four fortnights.

Clarke's offending only stopped when he ceased work in December 2010.

Mr Guilfoyle said the system relied on the honesty of recipients. …
