Govt 'Trying to Stamp on Democracy'

CRAIG Allen has seen the good, the bad and the ugly too -- but from LNP governments and in the corporate world.

The Queensland Council of Unions secretary was responding to comments last week from Member for Keppel Bruce Young, who said he had seen the positives and negatives of unions in the workplace and in society.

Mr Allen said Mr Young and his fellow state MPs were trying to stamp on democracy with their hardline stance on unions.

"They are trying to prevent any organisation, such as unions, from being a voice against bad government decisions," he said. "Apart from the Opposition, who else is going to be the voice of the people?"

While acknowledging the collective bargaining power of unions, Mr Young was quoted as saying that for too long he had seen the misuse of union funds, unbeknown to union members and contrary to what they would have wished.

Mr Allen returned serve, saying: "While Bruce Young sits there and claims it's good that union members get to decide if money should be spent on political campaigns, what he is failing to tell the community is that the costs associated with running a ballot of union members far exceeds the cost that we are seeking to spend. …
