TRIATHLON: Kawana Island ironman David Dellow has spoken about the "dark place" he visited after a virus ended his world championship dream this year.

Instead of attempting to turn "career-best form" into a debut world title at Hawaii last month, Dellow was bedridden on the island tourist mecca.

Back on the Sunshine Coast, the 34-year-old is easing back into training as he eyes next year's world championship.

Dellow contracted the undiagnosed virus about 10 days out from the October 13 race after travelling to Kona, Hawaii, from his Thailand training base.

The 2011 Noosa Triathlon champion had been in Thailand with teamTBB (Tiger Thai Boxing) for close to three months.

His sole focus this year was Kona, after his ninth there on debut in 2012.

On the day of the race, he tweeted: "I've had a virus for the past week, so just a spectator today."

The tweet's matter-of-factness belied his inner torment.

"I was leaving it to the last minute to decide, but I was absolutely bedridden," he said. …
