I LEARNT a valuable lesson this week: your children are not you.

I always thought my kids would follow in my footsteps or at least be heavily influenced when it came to the big issues in life such as religion and politics.

My little toddler stumped and surprised me this week when she became a radical opponent of one of my fundamental beliefs.

What issue is the cause of such pain between mother and daughter, you ask? Black jelly beans.

Yes, my own flesh and blood emphatically told me she does not like black jelly beans.

I did not understand her vehement dislike for the greatest flavour jelly bean of the entire packet and on the entire planet.

Indeed, I was raised a black jelly bean junkie.

When Mum took me to the doctor I would stick my hand into the jar and fish around for the aniseed treats.

So of course I thought we were raising a household of children who would grow up to be kind and courteous and patient.

And as a bonus my dream was always that my children would carry the very important virtue of savouring black beans. …
