THE push to return a vital community service to the Sunshine Coast hinterland has gone national.

Member for Fisher Mal Brough used the first sitting of the new parliament to highlight how the closure of Australia Post at Montville was affecting the locals.

The service shut on November 1 after a search for a new licensee failed to attract viable interest.

Mr Brough told parliament the closure had left small business and the elderly in the lurch.

"I call upon it to make some facility available there, and also where it has closed operations at Caloundra in this lead-up to the Christmas period," he said.

Earlier yesterday in Canberra, Mr Brough gave his second maiden speech, with loyalty and service as key themes.

Mr Brough said he had earned the trust and respect of the people of Fisher, promising it would be an "ongoing responsibility" as long as he sat in the House. And despite speculation surrounding his role in the political demise of Peter Slipper, Mr Brough said he was first and foremost a private member for Fisher. …
