CRICKET: Sunshine Coast Scorcher Calum Haggett might have died if his cricket skills had not gained him selection in the England under-19 cricket team.

Four years ago, Haggett was selected in the English team and underwent a routine heart check-up as part of his medical assessment.

Tests revealed he had an enlarged aorta, which would have killed him within two years if it had gone undetected.

The sufferer does not experience any symptoms before their heart "explodes" when the aorta swells to the brink.

"I was fortunate enough the ECB (English Cricket Board) did heart testing," he said yesterday.

"I was really lucky it was found, because I would have died. My heart would have exploded and I would have died instantly."

Haggett underwent surgery, which put him out of the game just as his career was taking off.

"I toured with them (the England under-19s) in Bangladesh and was meant to go to the World Cup but had to pull out," he said.

"I was out for about five months and I'm happy now that it's all been sorted."

Haggett returned to play for Kent and has been at the county since.

The right-arm quick packed up with his good friend and Scorchers teammate Fabian Cowdrey and arrived on the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

Haggett said the Coast was proving to be the perfect destination for a playing holiday. …
