GOLF: Left-hander Ali Orchard needs to draw on her strong finish in the Queensland amateur championship when she takes to the course today for the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast Ladies Open Amateur Championship.

Orchard finished second at the state championship, losing to Ashley Ona over 36 holes after shooting an eagle to finish the tournament.

The 22-year-old from Gympie has been in sparkling form and is currently the leading Queenslander on the Australian amateur ranking system, but she needs to improve dramatically on her opening round of nine-over 82 yesterday.

The university student rates defending champion and Sunshine Coast player Lauren Mason (one-over 74) as the one to beat.

Orchard said she would have to be on her game if she was to challenge for the win.

"Lauren will be very hard to beat and is in pretty good form at the moment," she said.

"But being defending champion means that all the pressure is on her."

Orchard has just wrapped up the third year of a Sports and Business Management degree. …
