BOXING trainer-manager Brendon Smith stands by his Toowoomba fight proposal for Michael Katsidis and is puzzled by the former interim WBO world lightweight champion's reaction to the offer.

Katsidis last week announced plans for a ring comeback in Brisbane next month before challenging either Brett Smith or Joey Williams for the WBF world title in Toowoomba next February.

Acting on behalf of his Toowoomba-based fighter, Jack Asis, Smith immediately offered Katsidis as an alternative the opportunity to fight Asis in Toowoomba for the WBC All Asia lightweight title.

Smith said a WBC world top-10 ranking would likely await the winner.

Katsidis flatly rejected the Asis option and claimed the proposal has damaged the pathway of his ring comeback.

Smith said yesterday the Asis and Katsidis fight proposal was made in the interests of both fighters and he couldn't understand how it interfered with Katsidis's plan for a return to boxing in Queensland. …
