Don't Be a Fan of Jesus, Follow Him

I AM a hopelessly devoted sports fan. When it comes to my AFL team, my State-of-Origin team, the Aussie cricket team, or almost any Aussie national team, I'm an enthusiastic fan.

I wear my colours proudly. And when I go to a game I wave a flag, cheer and shout, sometimes even say polite things about the referee! I read books or magazines about my teams. I check the scores on my mobile phone, listen on the radio, and watch the game live on TV.

When it comes to my faith, however, I don't want to be a fan. I want to be a participant. I want to be a disciple! I want to be a fair dinkum follower of Jesus.

Following Jesus is not like a[approximately]following' someone on Twitter or Facebook. It's not like being the adoring fan of some celebrity. It means learning from Jesus; following the example of Jesus; doing the things Jesus taught; serving others as Jesus did; and being defined by the practical love that Jesus demonstrated. And this will cost us. …
