BILLINGHAM hero Michael Evans has had surgery at James Cook Hospital after suffering a broken jaw in scoring the decisive try in the side's 25-17 win at Bradford and Bingley.

"He did well to hold on to the ball to score," said director of rugby Stewart Evans, Michael's dad. "A flying arm crunched him in the face as he went over the line. He lost consciousness, and the Bradford player was shown a straight red card.

"Michael has broken his jaw in two places. He had ex-rays at Bradford Hospital then travelled back for surgery.

"He was well enough as he waited for the operation to ask the surgeon when he could play again. He was told at least three months as the jaw would need plates and wire."

The win eased Billingham further from the wrong end of the National Three North table, especially as Bradford failed to get a bonus point. Peter Evans, playing at No 10, scored two tries, and kicked two penalties and two conversions. No 8 Michael scored his try with Billingham leading 18-17.

GUISBOROUGH continued their stunning home form with a 40-15 win over Bishop Auckland to remain top of Durham and North One.

"You have to back yourselves to win home games, and we are unbeaten here for three years," said skipper James Clark.

"It was a good squad performance, the first time we have played 60 minutes of good rugby. Owen Edwards stood out and scored two tries. Zack McCluskey made good tackles and Jack Robinson and James Fitzgibbon were back from university, and played well.

"I'm a bit surprised we are top as we lost a lot of players at the end of last season. But we have a good squad with key players. The target is to stay on top and keep winning bonus points."

The side is there to be shot at and expects teams to battle extra hard to take Guisborough's scalp, especially in away games. …
