BEACHGOERS who strike trouble in the surf may soon be in the hands of one of 30 rookie lifeguards attending a two-day training program at Lennox Head.

The 2013 Australian Lifeguard Service school is being held at Camp Drewe, near Lake Ainsworth. It started yesterday and will be completed today.

The aspiring lifeguards' physical skills have already been tested and the school aims to prepare them for all other aspects of the job.

Those attending come from Kempsey, Nambucca, Bellingen, Clarence Valley, Ballina, Byron and Tweed shire councils.

"They will all learn a lot over the two days, including briefings from senior emergency services personnel," Northern NSW Lifeguard co-ordinator Scott McCartney said.

"During the physical assessment they were pushed to the limit. This school continues to test their skills and their decision-making ability."

While the school gives the students the skills to work on the beach, senior lifeguards are assessing the candidates on their suitability to be appointed as employed lifeguards. …
