A NATIONAL report has singled out Hervey Bay Hospital for the high percentage of breast cancer sufferers who had to wait longer than 30 days for surgery in 2011-12.

The report was released by the National Health Performance Authority to measure waiting times for planned cancer surgeries.

It showed Hervey Bay Hospital performed 84% of breast cancer surgeries within 30 days.

It was the second-worst percentage for major regional hospitals, equal to the Royal Darwin Hospital.

At 79%, Nambour Hospital was the only major regional hospital in Australia with a lower percentage during 2011-12.

But statistics from the latest financial year show no woman has had to wait longer than 31 days.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services chief executive officer Adrian Pennington said 82 women had breast cancer surgery across Hervey Bay and Maryborough in the past year.

He said 80 women were treated within 30 days and two women waited 31 days for surgery. …
