ADVERTISING at Coffs Harbour Regional Airport has been a source of simmering dissatisfaction for more than five years and the matter blew up again at Thursday's city council meeting.

The council was considering two tenders for advertising at the facility - one from offshore company Interspace Airport Advertising Australia, which has the current contract, and the second submitted by Tourism Coffs Coast.

Former deputy mayor Rod McKelvey addressed the council to argue in favour of the council changing its criteria for assessing the tender.

He said that two of the five criteria, which focused on airport advertising experience, had heavily influenced the result, yet there had been no criteria for local business experience or a track record of success in promoting the local region, which could have provided a completely different outcome.

The former councillor, who has had 25 years experience in this area of business, said the airport advertising was "run-of-the-mill stuff" which was "very easy for any marketing manager of any worth", while all required materials were available locally. …
