Ban on Dogs to Help Koalas; DECISION DEFENDED: But Agents Say It Would Be Commercial Disaster

TWEED real estate agents have backed a claim that a dog ban at the planned $2.25 billion Kings Forest residential estate would likely be a commercial disaster.

They say you only have to look at Koala Beach north of Pottsville - the first residential estate to be planned around wildlife - to see the impact of a canine crackdown.

LJ Hooker Pottsville real estate agent Jamie Wilmen said the dog ban saw 40% of sales inquiries for the estate turned away with only 5% of buyers attracted by the no dogs policy.

Marketing agent Lance Cotterill, who has marketed dozens of local residential estates, said he rejected an offer from Koala Beach developers, the Ray Group, to sell the estate due to his fears about the dog ban scaring off buyers which proved valid.

"The sales were very slow for a long time," he said.

"Any development is going to be affected by a dog ban."

Koala Beach is 360 ha with more than 500 lots compared to Kings Forest's 4500 lots on 880ha south of Kingscliff. …
