I DON'T like Melbourne.

I know you might love it, but to me it is just a big city with no real heart and far too many confusing toll roads.

However, I've found a reason to visit Melbourne time and time again.

It is called Balgownie Estate Vineyard Resort and Spa in the heart of the Yarra Valley.

A comfortable hour's drive (toll- free) from the airport, Balgownie is close enough to reach quickly and far enough to feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

It might be the vines that make Balgownie a wine lovers' destination but it is the beauty and the fragrances of the bushes of roses lining the entrance that will linger in your memory.

Since its opening in 2002, Balgownie has been maturing like a good bottle of red to provide the best experience one could hope for in a weekend away, and not just in accommodation.

It is the only resort in the Yarra Valley that is a working vineyard, spa retreat and restaurant.

It's hardly surprising Balgownie took out the Regional Accommodation of the Year State award for 2013.

The 4.5-star guest suites are tastefully and luxuriously appointed.

They're not ostentatious or grand, but you feel like you are being pampered as everything appears to be carefully chosen.

This is another stand-out feature of Balgownie.

While emphasis is on luxury and a good time, the importance of sustainability and caring for the environment is evident everywhere from the rainwater tanks to the clever architecture which helps Balgownie blend into its natural environment.

This is a destination the sustainable-conscious can enjoy without guilt.

And those who can't spare a thought for the environment need not fear that their desire for the feeling of indulgence will be compromised.

Balgownie is an estate for the romantic. How could it not be with the roses, wines, stunning outlook and the massive spa bath in the bedroom?

Already it has gained a reputation as the perfect wedding venue.

But there is also room for conferences, with state-of-the-art conference facilities available to cater for small or larger groups. …
