GATESHEAD potter John Astley hailed the biggest win of his career so far after he knocked out former world champion Ken Doherty in the first round of the UK Championships.

The 24-year-old left-hander held his nerve in a final-frame decider to edge out Doherty 6-5 and seal his passage through to the round of 64.

Astley, the current world No 99, is on his first year on the tour full-time while Doherty, the 1997 world champion, is a veteran in his 23rd season.

But despite the gap in experience it was Astley who kept cool in a final frame that was only decided on the final pink.

"That's huge, the biggest win of my career so far," said Astley. "Having only got on the tour this year, it's massive for me and I'm absolutely delighted.

"I was nervous but I felt quite good at the same time, to be honest I thought I controlled my nerves pretty well throughout the match.

"I just took one shot at a time and made sure I potted everything, it's all about playing the right shots because when the pressure is on you can make the wrong choices. …
