THE thunder and lightning brought by the storms that washed out the Sugar Cities games at the weekend was insignificant compared to the destruction Jarrod Laycock unleashed on the Past Grammars bowling attack.

Grammars bowlers were looking to keep their own records intact and were seen hiding from their captain behind umpires and in the change rooms as they sought refuge from Superstorm Laycock as he smashed his Division 1 career best score of 152 from an amazing 68 balls.

Like a cyclone, Laycock started gently before intensifying. As he gathered momentum he couldn't be stopped and finished with 10 fours and 13 sizes, including a 10-ball period that yielded 42 runs.

Laycock said the luxury of coming in halfway through the innings gave him freedom to play his shots, and advice by David Boge (57 runs) was happily followed.

"I went in knowing they (Grammars) had a strong batting line up and we needed the runs," he said. "We made a good start and I came in around the 18-over mark. …
