Point-Counterpoint; Can the Jaguars Start a Winning Streak?

Article excerpt

Byline: Ryan O'Halloran and Jessica Blaylock

Each week, Times-Union Jaguars writer Ryan O'Halloran and 1010XL Jaguars reporter Jessica Blaylock will debate five topics.

1. Looking back to last week. Of all the things that happened in the Jaguars' first win of the year, what was most important as it pertains to them moving forward?

Jessica Blaylock: Not just winning the turnover battle but capitalizing on those turnovers. The Jaguars defense not only put the offense in great position but scored on Will Blackmon's sack/fumble return late in the game (plus they added a safety earlier in the fourth quarter).

Ryan O'Halloran: The defense's ability to stop Tennessee's running game. Throughout the season's first half, the Jaguars' defensive front was regularly gashed, including 178 by San Diego and 221 by San Francisco heading into the bye week. But the Titans rushed 27 times for 83 yards and Chris Johnson was held in check.

2. Marcedes Lewis has only five catches in his three games back from left calf problems. How important is it to for the Jaguars to get him more involved in the offense?

Jessica: Very important. He showed what he could do on that ridiculous run where he not only picked up yards after the catch but dragged two or three defenders with him. He has to run-block because of the offensive line struggles, but I still think they need to get him more involved.

Ryan: We saw some of it last week and it has to do with having tight end Clay Harbor on the field with Lewis. If the Jaguars feel they need a sixth (or seventh) pass protector, they can use Harbor in that role, which would allow Lewis to run a route. That might be in play against Arizona because the Jaguars are again down to four healthy receivers and might figure two-tight end packages is their best option to create offense.

3. Coach Gus Bradley said Wednesday that Denard Robinson is splitting second-team running back reps with Jordan Todman. At this point, what is the point of working Robinson into the mix?

Jessica: Keep him off the field until he proves he can carry the ball without losing it. …
