ALL IT takes is a few battering storms to know if you're "storm ready" or not.

The storm season started in earnest last week, with hail, wind and rain wreaking havoc across the eastern seaboard.

The State Emergency Service recommends taking eight simple steps to prepare your home for the storm season.

Maintain your yard and secure or store items that could blow around in strong winds. These can pick up even large items such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron, causing damage to windows, roofs and cars.

Clean your gutters, downpipes and drains regularly to prevent blockages. These can cause water to overflow under the eaves into the roof cavity.

Trim tree branches that could fall on your home or property. Check with your local council about any guidelines or required consent applications. Have a qualified arborist inspect trees every two to three years to identify any preventative action necessary. …
