Jim's Passion Has Kids Rocking across the Country

JIM Marshall can remember all of the 157 wooden rocking horses he has handcrafted over the past 24 years.

Last Sunday he set up shop at the Glengallan Markets and showed off his handy craftsmanship skills to many onlookers.

Woodwork has always been a hobby for Mr Marshall, but it was a former neighbour who introduced him to the art of making rocking horses.

"My neighbour made 26 rocking horses when he was alive," he said.

"He asked me to store one for him, which was destined for a family member, and he lent me a book on how to make them.

"In my spare time I gave it a go and have made 156 others since then."

Mr Marshall, a Vietnam veteran, builds the rocking horses as a hobby, making and selling five a year.

"The top range horses can take up to 250 hours to make, the smaller ones around 150 hours," he said.
