Couch Named to Lead Duval School Board; but Gentle Sparks Fly during Effort to Decide on New Vice Chairperson

The Duval County School Board elected its new chairwoman Tuesday in Rebecca Couch, but it was the secondary chairperson position that caused the most friction.

Couch moved up from vice chairwoman taking over for Fel Lee, who nominated her, until November 2014. Jason Fischer nominated Connie Hall, who declined.

Board members were about to vote on a new vice chairperson when Paula Wright expressed her eagerness to serve in the position. In a short speech, Wright said she wanted to become vice chairwoman and that three years ago she won the election for District 4 with 72 percent of the vote. Since then, Wright said she voted to keep schools open, spoke with state and national education leaders and worked with Superintendent Nikolai Vitti to give federal Head Start operations the resources needed to remain open during the summer.

Wright said up until Thursday she was the only person slated to become vice chairwoman. …
