Best styles for thin hair

According to Richard Weakly, senior stylist at Bangalow Hairdressing, the best styles for thin hair are:

Blunt, short and dark (but not jet black) shapes are great. Short styles allow you to manipulate hair over thin parts without falling down from the weight of length.

Textures can hide a thinning scalp. Think tousled beach hair. Soft waves/curls can amp up lack of volume. Encourage natural wave by having a texture-instating haircut. Creating a sub-layer of shorter hair within a haircut can help hold the shape up.

Colour variety can draw the eye to the texture as well away from the scalp. A variety of mid-toned blondes and browns works well.

Drawing the focal point to the ends of the hair works well too. Dip-dye effects with colour, deeper colours at the roots lighter on the ends (or my fave - copper ends) works well.

Avoid scalp bleaching, jet black and of course - the ol' comb-over.

I HAVE an embarrassing but common beauty problem. As I am getting older, my naturally fine hair is thinner that it was.

While there are medical conditions that can cause this, or even dietary factors such as a lack of zinc, many women will find that the texture and thickness of their hair simply changes as they age.

And while many probably won't talk about it, not even to their hairdresser, the growth in volumising products and scalp treatments would seem to indicate the problem is increasing.

"Forty-six percent of women globally are concerned with thinning hair, yet only a quarter of them act on it," says Marianne Knutson, vice-president of Global Marketing, Aveda.

Obviously a shampoo and condition that promises to bulk up hair is one way to disguise sparser locks.

There's plenty on the market but I love John Frieda's volumising range.
