"We are really lucky to trade in an area which truly appreciates its local shops," says Jo Adams of the awardwinning Stoke Newington Bookshop, one of the few independent bookshops left anywhere in the capital.

"Having been here for over 26 years, we're very much part of the community and have developed a relationship with customers and their children over the years. We know many by name, know what they bought last time, the sort of books they enjoy and we can recommend what they might like to read next.

"We're also fortunate to have enough space to have an entire class from one of the local schools in the shop together - and we even love dogs!" However, being in a high street that has one of the highest number of independent shops in the country does more than foster a good community spirit. By shopping at a local retailer like the Stoke Newington Bookshop, customers are also helping their local area.
