Euro Break Can Put the Falcons on Front Foot; No 8 Chris York Seeks Improvements Ahead of Return Date with Italians

NEWCASTLE Falcons flanker Chris York knows back-to-back wins against Calvisano can put his side in with a great chance of a European quarter-final, but admits they can still make considerable improvements.

Beating Calvisano 37-15 at Kingston Park on Sunday to join Brive at the top of Amlin Challenge Cup Pool C, the same two teams meet again in northern Italy on Sunday as the competition passes its midway point.

"In terms of where we can improve, our precision and patience are the main things when we get the ball," said York, who scored his first try in Newcastle colours after joining from Harlequins in the summer of 2012.

"Obviously we want to play as much as we can, but in wet and windy conditions you have to build your pressure and look after possession when you have it inside their half."

Satisfied with much of what his side produced at Kingston Park, he said: "We set out with the five points in mind, so in terms of achieving that goal we are happy enough.

"That puts us in a decent position going forward in terms of being joint-top of the group, and hopefully we can get the same result out in Italy on Saturday.

"We want to proceed in the competition and, while everybody knows the league is the priority, we still want to go as far as we can in every competition we are playing in."

Assessing the plus points from Sunday's convincing triumph, the No 8 highlighted mental as well as physical contributions from a side including a host of fringe figures "At times I felt we won the collisions quite well," he said.

"Our attitude was spot-on, our kickchase put pressure on them and forced a few errors which gave us some decent rewards.

"I managed to get a little bit of space in which to have a few runs. Scoring my first try for the Falcons was nice as well, and hopefully I can follow it up with a second score in less than a year and a half! …
