Game dinners While you won't find a partridge in a pear tree at the historic Quality Chop House restaurant in Farringdon, there's plenty of good game options to choose from on their comforting winter menu.

Having stood on the same site since 1869, the Chop House provides ideal surroundings for a traditional British lunch or dinner. Designed originally as an upmarket space with popular appeal, the wooden booths were once filled with an egalitarian crowd of literary types and local residents.

How much: [pounds sterling]35 a head Where from: Craneberry Fest Cranberries and birds are the perfect complement, but thankfully the winged participants in this year's WWT London Wetland Centre Craneberry Fest won't be ending up on any dinner plates. Until 26 January, various events and workshops are taking place in honour of the red wetland fruit and endangered wetland bird, the crane, after which cranberries are named.

Children at the wildlife centre can learn how to make decorations for the tree and cranberry bird feeders for the garden, then take part in a special trail through the wetlands. And for anyone that gets a bit peckish, there's cranberry paninis and mince pies to enjoy in the restaurant.

Brighton's Churchill Square shopping centre, however, promises a very alternative present giving experience with its wonderfully ridiculous grotto, designed by the creative masterminds behind the Brighton Rocks! events.
