IF Boro fans think they have endured an up and down existence from the lows of liquidation to the highs of top flight football, then spare a thought for Saturday's visitors Brighton Their finest hour and lowest point were just 14 years apart.

They reached the FA Cup Final in 1983, losing 4-0 in a replay to Manchester United after a thrilling 2-2 draw when Brighton almost snatched a Wembley winner with virtually the last kick of the game, Gordon Smith being clean through only to see Gary Bailey smother his shot.

Then it was downhill - and fast. Little over a decade later they had to sell the Goldstone Ground to pay debts.

They ended up bottom of the Football League and staring relegation in the face, before new manager Steve Gritt turned things round.

But they were deducted two points following a pitch invasion by fans protesting at the sale of their ground.

A lifelong fan, Dick Knight took control of the club having led the fan pressure to oust the previous board, and after being 13 points adrift Brighton climbed to second from bottom. …
