Magic Lantern to Shed Light on Village Life in the 19th Century; Heritage

AVINTAGE magic lantern will flicker into life this weekend to take Northumberland villagers on a trip back in time.

They will be treated to images of local people and places from as far back as 120 years after the discovery of 83 glass slides hidden behind piles of objects in a church tower cupboard.

The boxes of magic lantern slides were found in St Michael's Church at Warden, near Hexham, where the North and South Tyne converge.

The find was made by the then vicar, the Rev Roger Cutler, and the slides were passed to Warden parish councillor Rob Tindall for safekeeping.

Meanwhile, an appeal was launched to raise PS110,000 for repairs to the Saxon tower of the church.

George Auckland, chairman of the national Magic Lantern Society, heard about the slides and will now visit the neighbouring village of Fourstones on Saturday, bringing with him two original machines.

To raise money for the appeal, he will show a selection of the slides at 5pm in the wooden St Aidan's Church at Fourstones.

It is thought that the slides were last seen in the 1930s when the vicar of the time used them to entertain local groups.

The slides feature local characters such as pipe-smoking Granny Teasdale, who died aged 102 in 1902. There is deputy Stokoe emerging from Fourstones Colliery, which closed in 1926 and workers at a quarry near the village which supplied stone for Newcastle Central Station.

The staff of Newbrough Hall, designed by John Dobson in the early 19th century, are pictured in 1888.

Other images range from a 19th century group in front of the Red Lion pub in Newbrough to haymakers and the long-vanished suspension bridge at Warden.

Rob says: "The slides are astonishing and a valuable local resource. The subjects are of local scenes, activities and characters. …
