PETE Burrey's pipe and slippers can stay in their drawers for the time being.

The 64-year-old is gearing up for another busy year on the rallying circuit, starting with the Targa West Point in Tasmania at the start of February.

More than 100 of the country's best competitors will hurtle through southern Tasmania in cars capable of hitting 250km/h during the two-day event.

Married grandfather-of-six Burrey, who will navigate for driver Clinton Arentz in their Mitsubishi Evo car, said his competitive spirit still burns strong.

"I suppose I still have that a[approximately]competitive beast'," he said.

"I guess it's the thrill of knowing that you have driven a section of road to the best of your ability. There's the adrenalin of being out there.

"At the end of it, if you can get out of the car and go, a[approximately]wow, wasn't that fantastic', that's what keeps me going."

The Pocket-based Burrey is a veteran of racing, having competed in top-level rallying for several years. …
