TWO months ago Ballina High school captain Daniel Kapeen opened a letter that put on hold his dreams of studying engineering at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

A keen sportsman, Daniel was still recovering from a knee reconstruction in 2012 after tearing a ligament playing football, throwing into doubt his planned Army future.

A chipped ankle bone from a game of volleyball earlier this year didn't help his cause either.

Daniel topped specialist maths at Ballina High, came second in chemistry and third in physics while juggling his role as school captain.

But despite earlier assuring him a place, the injuries led to ADFA withdrawing the offer.

The young Bundjalung man, who was looking forward to new horizons in Canberra, recalled his disappointment.

"I just scrunched it (the letter) up and threw it in the bin," he said.

Fate had dealt him what seemed like a bitter blow but there was a silver lining. …
