Article excerpt

INSPIRATIONAL elite sports star Bethan Kelly joined Hartlepool Sixth Form College and its Elite Sports programme in September 2013.

She is studying A-levels in English literature, PE, philosophy and ethics and history.

Bethan has achieved a ranking of 10 in the Team GB Kayak Team this year and is in full winter training for competing as part of the team for next season. Bethan's season started fantastically after a very demanding winter training regime, she ranked in the top three in all of her races.

With the improvements in Bethan's times she was promoted to the premier division which had been a long term goal.

Bethan is also a member of the college's Reach For The Stars programme which targets those students that join the college with excellent GCSE results.

The combination of the Elite Sports Programme and the academic support that she gets will ensure that she can fulfil her sporting dreams whilst achieving at the highest level academically.

Bethan said: "I came to Hartlepool Sixth Form College from High Tunstall because I thought that it was a good college and when I came to the open evenings I liked the teachers and all the subject choices. I am currently studying history, English literature, physical education and philosophy, ethics and religion.

"Outside of college I enjoy doing sport (canoeing with the national squad) and I am currently completing a teacher placement at High Tunstall. I would like to progress onto studying at a university.

"My dream job would be to be successful at my sport. I like Hartlepool Sixth Form College because of the tutors I have for my subjects and just generally enjoy studying here.

"I think that the atmosphere is great, I like the timetable that I have been given and all of the study periods that I have so I can catch up on my work. The support that I get for my sport through the Elite Sport programme is amazing and helping me to achieve to my full potential."

The college sports department does not interfere with the programme that has been put in place for Bethan. …
