THERE'S a lot to love about living in the tropics. Great lifestyle, gorgeous surroundings and the weather's pretty good too.

Pretty good? Yes, that's righta[degrees] just pretty good. Okay, okay - well I'd probably feel a little more grateful about living where it goes from being so hot you feel as if you need sunscreen inside the house one day, and the next the rain pummels down in waterfalls, had I not just had to endure a 12-hour road trip in these conditions.

One of the big differences between regional and city drivers is the number of kilometres we country mice clock up on the highway - travelling at speed and under all sorts of hazardous conditions.

This was at the forefront of my mind when I headed to Pioneer Holden to take the new Barina out for a run. Beep, beep Barina?

I know, I knowa[degrees]that's precisely what I thought too.

But no, not at all - not a beep, buzz, rattle or honk - the new Barina RS is sophisticated, sassy and has a certain suburban-mafia swagger.

Righto - so I'm enamoured with Barina's street appeal. Its confident, charismatic stance captivates while its clever features convince.

From the front fog lamps and headlights that feature "follow me home" functionality through to the hidden rear door handles and rear roof spoiler - the Barina RS has been built to seduce.

Climbing behind the wheel just as the heavens opened up - I held onto my resolve not to be hoodwinked by its fabulous first impression.

Oooohhhha[degrees]frontseat warmer - that's a good start. I headed through city streets, through Paget on my way to the Bruce Hwy.

While on the inside, you'd swear you were driving a medium-sized car - the Barina handles with the agility and dexterity of a compact vehicle.

Manoeuvering around potholes, dodging detour signs or other unexpected road hazards - normally even more difficult to navigate in the rain - felt like pure instinct behind the wheel of the Barina RS.

Setting the three-spoke steering wheel with height and reach adjustment into place, familiarising myself with the easy-to-read dashboard and instrument cluster and setting the revolutionary Holden Mylink system to my favourite tunes, I set my sights on the open road.

If you haven't heard about Holden Mylink before - well, I'm not surprised.

Exclusive to Holden - Mylink is the futuristic infotainment system which offers technology at your fingertips via a seven-inch colour touch-screen featuring Bluetooth audio-streaming, USB and iPod connectivity as well as the ability to store up to 35 AM/FM radio stations and view movies and photo slides. …
