No Time to Lose in January Window, Says Gus

GUS Poyet wants to strengthen his Sunderland squad as soon as the transfer window reopens in January.

The Black Cats boss has already outlined to director of football Roberto De Fanti the areas he wants to reinforce, and he admits there is no time to waste at the turn of the New Year.

Sunderland are battling to retain their Premier League status and, with four league games scheduled for January as well as two legs of a mouthwatering cup semi-final against Manchester United, cannot afford to wait until the end of the window to bring in fresh faces.

"My aim all the time is to do things quickly in January," said Poyet.

"We're having meetings practically every day and we're getting close to January now.

"January 1 is a Wednesday, it's not on the weekend, so if there are not any problems with bringing them in from abroad, they could be signed that day. Those are the things that you need to manage.

"But it's not only in my hands. It's in the hands of the other people as well - the player, the other club, the transfer, the agreement and if there are other options.

"There are so many things involved.

"Now, as the manager, I want them in tomorrow so they could train with us for a week before the first! That would be perfection."

Sunderland are currently at the foot of the table, and cannot climb off the bottom before Christmas.

But Poyet is determined to get out of relegation trouble in the second half of the campaign, and knows that making the right signings in January will be crucial.

And in that case, he would be prepared to wait until the right player becomes available - even if it means he has to be patient.

He said: "There are some deals that I would prefer not to do immediately because you need to wait.

"But with waiting, you don't know if it's going to happen. If I have got another option, which I like and is similar, I'll do it and the other one loses his chance. …
