CHRISTMAS time, mistletoe and wildlife With less than a week to go until Christmas, and as I scrabble about to try and finish my Christmas shopping, there is definitely a sprinkling of festive cheer around Saltholme.

The shop and cafe have been visited by the winter fairy, with twinkling lights and decorations abound.

Festive beverages are available in the cafe, and we've started the pre-Christmas sale in the shop.

At this time of year we do, of course, think about the wildlife that visits the reserve. We have huge numbers of ducks and geese that spend the winter months with us here at Saltholme, some species, like the barnacle goose and the whooper swan, we only see in the winter.

We are also seeing the smaller birds visiting the feeding stations around the reserve in larger numbers as the natural berry and seed crops run low.

Feeding your garden birds is so rewarding, not only do we help our wildlife make it through the tougher winter months, but the beauty and variety that can be witnessed in your own back yard truly is payment itself. …
