IN THE SWIM; Yamba Race a Huge Drawcard

THE YAMBA Ocean Swim is expected to attract more than 300 swimmers to Main Beach on Sunday.

Included in the field will be some ultra strong athletes, including home-grown ironwoman Alyce Bennett, retired ironman Hugh Dougherty and upcoming swimming sensation Ben Schafer.

But you don't have to be a world-beating superfish to take part and enjoy the event.

A Yamba local all her life, Angela Eke is preparing for her first ocean race.

"I've always thought it was something I couldn't do because I'm not much of a swimmer," Eke said.

Only recently Eke joined a group who train by tracing the actual Yamba Ocean Swim route.

Every Sunday morning Clarence River Masters swimmers hit the water to swim from Convent Beach to Main Beach and back.

Most then participate in the weekly Carl Schaeffer Memorial Handicap Swim at Main Beach.

"Jane and Dubbo Lawrence organise a casual swim and I did my first one a couple of months ago," Angela Eke said. …
