SPEEDWAY: The rumble of massive V8 engines echoed throughout Gympie on New Year's Eve when drivers unleashed at Mothar Mountain Speedway during Tuesday night's race meeting.

Super Sedan drivers from all over the country gathered at Gympie's unique kidney shaped track for the second round of the National Super Sedan Series.

In what Gympie Speedway publicity officer Amy Brown described an "intense race", Victoria's Mick Nicola emerged victorious while Michael Doblo and Gympie's Mark Pagel claimed second and third respectively.

"The super sedans put on an entertaining race as always and it was good to see local driver Mark Pagel get in the top three," she said.

"Unfortunately, because of hot conditions leading up to the event, the track was dusty, but everybody put up with it and enjoyed the action-packed night of racing."

Following his round one triumph, Darren Kane was poised to be the favourite on Tuesday, but he blew his engine earlier in the night.

"We saw some great sportsmanship when Darren blew his engine during his heat races," Brown said. …
