Youngster Bidding to Walk the Line One Year on from Life-Changing Op

IN the space of a year, Callum Brown's world has been transformed.

With dreams of becoming a linesman, the nineyear-old is facing a future of endless possibilities after a life-changing operation helped him start walking unaided for the first time in his life.

It was this time last year that Callum and his parents Sharon and Neil, from Seaton Sluice in Northumberland, were preparing to jet to America for the pioneering surgery they had spent months raising PS50,000 to pay for.

Fast-forward just one year, and life could not be more different for the Brown family.

"It just seems like yesterday but it is so long now, that day stuck in the airport thinking 'Are we ever going to get there because of the weather'," said Sharon, 41.

"When I look back I can't remember how he was before because of the progress he has made.

"It has been a whirlwind of emotion - when we look at things it's like he couldn't do this and that and now he can.

"It is unbelievable and he is doing fantastic now," said Sharon.

The determined youngster, who started at Seaton Sluice Middle School in September, has vowed he will never again use his wheelchair and is slowly relying less and less on his sticks and other forms of support.

During his year of recovery, Callum has achieved many firsts, including playing in the sea and feeling sand between his toes, playing out with his friends, and being able to put on his own socks.

"It is tiny, little things like that, but being able to walk to the bench and make himself a drink, being able to go to the fridge and get a yoghurt himself, things every other child takes for granted mean so much to us now," said Sharon.

"He can play football in the garden with his dad and granddad for the first time, which is all he ever wanted to do. …
