Hull Second String 'Good Enough to See off Boro' FA CUP PREVIEW

HULL can beat Boro in Saturday's FA Cup clash - even if they field their reserves.

That's the presumptuous message to Tigers fans from former favourite Peter Swan.

Out-spoken journeyman defender turned pundit Swan said in his Hull Daily Mail column that Steve Bruce will rest a string of his key men but will still ease to victory.

It is the kind of provocative boast that traditionally is pinned up in the opposition team's dressing room in place of a team talk.

"With a large squad at his disposal, Bruce has the luxury of being able to juggle his line-up and hand a few fringe men their chance to start," said the Hull paper's answer to Bernie Slaven.

"Sometimes cup matches can be a hindrance, but when you have players who are hungry for a game it can act as a great spur for them to stay fit and push for a recall.

"That's certainly the case this weekend and there's no reason why City's second XI can't go to Boro and get a result and advance to the next round.

"Get an easy draw in the fourth round and you can quickly find yourself competing for a quarter-final spot and on a run to Wembley."

Swan started his career at home-town club Leeds before joining Hull and later played in the lower levels for Port Vale, Burnley, Bury and York.

He said he expected a string of changes with former Boro man Danny Graham and George Boyd expected to start along with Liam Rosenior, Abdoulaye Faye, Stephen Quinn and Paul McShane as Bruce shuffles his pack.

He continued: "After three games in six days Steve Bruce will be thinking about resting his key men. The players cannot keep up the same intensity. It takes its toll eventually.

"And that's one reason why fans can expect to see Bruce make sweeping changes to his starting line-up at Boro.

"But whoever comes in, the Tigers have more than enough quality. …
