THE Mackay public is backing calls for a change to the phrase "king hit".

Less than three months after Mackay man Brodie John Arthur Millard was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, with immediate parole, for punching another male in the face, the community has taken to Facebook in support of a name change for the "cowardly" act.

Mackay had its fair share of court cases for "king hit" assaults last year after Mark Paul Contreras was also sentenced to imprisonment, with immediate parole, for punching a man at a birthday part in Dysart.

The victim's jaw was fractured in two places after Contreras king hit him in the face.

The family of teenage king- hit victim Daniel Christie started a push for the use of the term "coward punch" after Mr Christie was assaulted on New Year's Eve while trying to help another man in King's Cross.

Shaun McNeil, 25, has been charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm over the attack. …
