SAILING: After four months of lagging health and performance, Noosa Laser class sailor Ryan Palk is relieved to find out why.

On returning home in late November last year from the class world championships in Oman, he went straight to the doctor and was told he had picked up a parasite, probably back in August.

Early next week is a key time in his recovery program. Palk knows if the current round of antibiotics is not working he will have to go on a much higher strength and spend more time off the water.

Palk spent a lot of last year competing at Laser class events around the globe as part of his campaign to achieve selection in the Australian team for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

In among the competitions there have also been training camps, one in Rio last August.

That appears to be where his picked up the parasite.

"The Australian team doctor will make sure the whole team can learn from this," Palk said.
