Wreckage from Yacht Washes Up onto Beach

CAPE Hillsborough Nature Resort has been picking up the pieces of a wrecked yacht that became stuck on rocks and has broken up.

The yacht owner and his wife were sailing from Mackay Marina to Cairns on Sunday, January 5 when they decided to moor the vessel near Cape Hillsborough for a brief rest.

However, the yacht became stuck on rocks, and the incoming tide pushed it further across the sharp edges, puncturing holes in the hull.

The man and his wife left the vessel in their dinghy, and spent the night sleeping on rocks, before reaching the nearby resort next morning.

It is believed the man didn't want to have anything more to do with the vessel, and offered anyone the chance to salvage what they could.

However, resort owner Ben Atherton said not much had been taken, because the yacht had been badly wrecked.

He was surprised at how little scavenging had taken place.
