BIG kids are choosing to stay home with their folks a little longer in Mackay.

Mackay building company Urban Trends Constructions has noted about 75% of the renovation work they do is to transform homes to accommodate adult children living with their parents.

Urban Trends Construction office manager Kathryn Ogilvie said a high cost of living and the previous year's tight rental market were two factors behind young people in Mackay choosing to stay close to the nest.

"We will often suggest adding an extra storey to the home," Ms Ogilvie said.

"The top floor can become a master suite for the parents... it gives families room to live with one another but not be in each others' pockets."

Mackay's Cunnington family is a prime example of this.

They recently renovated their Andergrove home to accommodate their whole family, which includes two adult daughters.

Parents Al and Craig and their children, Jhordan (20), Deiya (18), Wintah (17), Linx(4) and Indyah (1), all live under the same roof. …
