ARMED raiders have targeted seven shops on Tyneside in the first two weeks of the year.

In the latest in a string of robberies, masked men armed with crowbars burst into a closed supermarket and confronted staff working inside.

Today, as police continue to probe the frightening raids, which began on New Year's Day, Northumbria's Police and Crime Commisioner has vowed to meet with members of the business community to see what can be done to curb this type of crime.

Vera Baird said: "Shop and business workers deserve to be able to get on with their work without the fear of an armed robbery happening in their premises.

"Northumbria Police takes this crime very seriously and officers will do all they can to bring the perpetrators before the courts.

"I will soon be meeting representatives from the business community and discussing how we can work in partnership with them and USDAW (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) to help reduce this type of crime."

Police are today hunting two robbers who struck at the Tesco Extra Store, at Norham Road North Shields, on Sunday night.

Armed with crowbars and wearing ski-masks, the pair burst in through the rear door of the shop at around 9pm and stole mobile phones.

Staff who were working inside at the time were left shaken but unhurt.

Sunday's raid at Tesco was the third attack at a shop this weekend.

A robber armed with a knife struck at the Londis Store in Wensleydale Terrace, Blyth, at around 11.10am that day. He threatened a member of staff with a knife before fleeing with cash on a bike.

And, on Friday night, staff at the Betfred bookmakers, in Wide Open, North Tyneside, were threatened by a man with a hammer, who then stole cash before fleeing.

Other frightening raids this month include a robbery at the Post Office on Nile Street in North Shields, on the evening of Friday, January 10, and an attempted robbery at Nunsmoor Off-licence, in Fenham, Newcastle, on the same evening. …
