FA YOUTH CUP NEWCASTLE UNITED ......... 4 SUNDERLAND ....................... 0 JONATHYN QUINN knew what the odds were long before he walked out of St James' Park with the match ball under his arm after scoring the hat-trick that floored bitter rivals Sunderland.

Before the game the teenager from Ashington admitted that he and his team-mates should play their FA Youth Cup fourth round tie with Sunderland as if it were their last - because you never know what's round the corner.

Well that's exactly what the Toon's No 9 at Under-18 level did after notching once at the Leazes End and twice at the Gallowgate to do that famous shirt full justice.

One fan in the East Stand piped up: "If only our first team took the cups as serious as these lads".

He was bang on the money - but there was little chance of the Toon's Under-18s passing up this opportunity, as Quinn's pre-match words rung true.

Just over 3,500 fans packed into St James' Park last night as the queues for the turnstiles spiralled back on to the cobbled streets of Leazes Terrace in what felt like a throwback of days gone by, as Geordie fans turned up in numbers to see if the Academy could book that place in the fifth round.

They watched a nervous first half unfold, but two shots on target from Quinn tested Maksymilian Stryjek showed that Newcastle wanted this one that little bit more.

Sunderland froze on the night but despite settling a little despite the noise cascading down from the stands, United grabbed that all important goal just before the break.

There were 44 minutes on the clock when Rolando Aarons clipped in a cross from the right before Quinn's clinical finish left the keeper beaten all ends up.

It was a half-time lead that Newcastle deserved but Dave Watson's troops were far from finished. …
