Whitsundays Gets Ready to Ride out Dylan's Wrath

THE Whitsundays have battened down and are as "ready as you can be" for today's cyclone threat.

The mood in Airlie Beach was upbeat last night as category-one Cyclone Dylan loomed large on the tourist town. Former commodore and long-time member of the Whitsunday Sailing Club, Jimmy Hayes, was impressed with the region's preparation for today's blow.

"I think everyone's been pretty well prepared," Mr Hayes said.

"Everyone is aware of the dangers. We've had a few cyclones in the past few years and the whole region seems to be pretty well ready, as well as you can."

Mr Hayes' home received 75mm of rain overnight Wednesday and he said there had been consistent heavy rain squalls and gusty conditions yesterday.

He said winds had been up to 90kmh with the 4.3m high tide at 10am yesterday causing some flooding problems.

"The town has been holding up fairly well," Mr Hayes said. …
