IT SEEMS a constant failing of the human condition that while we plan out the early years of our lives (or, more precisely, have them planned for us) we don't plan ahead to our later years.

I hope that doesn't sound too much like I'm starting a career as a life insurance salesman. Making financial plans is very important but I'm talking more about the lifestyle we will live as we grow older, and eventually how we would like our lives to end.

I can understand how it is easier to plan the start of a life than the end of it, but it is no less important.

Some aspects are more difficult - you don't know exactly when your last years will be, and you don't know how healthy you will be - but that just means more careful planning is required.

As a society we owe it to our most senior citizens that they should be able to live and die with dignity. …
