Sport on the Rise as Weather Stays Mild

Article excerpt

ALTHOUGH the consistent rain has been troublesome, a climate so mild for late January has seen much more successful angling activity than past winters, and this will only rise as the daylight hours increase.

Some excellent catches have been made on The Angel complex this week - bream, orfe, ide, rudd, roach, tench and even carp have given anglers some good sport. Fish are still shoaled up tight as water temperature is low, however, and at Whittle Dene this was illustrated by one angler who found bites were frequently encountered at one spot yet produced nothing only inches away.

Sport on running waters has been spoiled by the high water levels, but Jimmy Messor recently caught a perch of 2lb from the Tees at Yarm. A large seal patrolling the match length has made fish stocks skitterish. The Angling Trust has been asked to return the seal to the North Sea.

Wansbeck and Cramlington AC's Winter League was fished in atrocious conditions on Sunday and Nigel Beardsley and George Goodall tied with 2lb 3oz apiece, ahead of John Roberts with 1lb 91/2oz. In the league first place went to Brendan Heslop ahead of Keith Melnyk, second, and Tommy Smith, third.

Yarm AA's match on the Tees went to Richy Bezemer with 18 roach for 4lb 11oz caught on worm. Mark Arrowsmith was runner-up with 4lb 5oz and Jimmy Messor third on 2lb 13oz.

Sunday's Open Lookout Lake went to Chris Pine with 51lb 3oz ahead of Graham Skirrey and Richard Wildman. Durham City AC are holding a number of open days for anglers wishing to renew membership as the clubs old PO Box address is no longer in service. The first of these is tomorrow at Brasside. Members will need relevant membership fee in cash, an email address and a blue badge if claiming disabled membership.

The club will take your photo and process your application online and your details including joining letter will be emailed to you immediately with a unique receipt number which will become your new membership number. …
